The people behind the screen: six habits for healthier hours at the desk

Your system should not cost you your evenings. Small changes that keep you sharp, all week.

We spend our working lives helping businesses get more out of their systems. But behind every screen is a person, and that person is you: closing the month, fixing stock at 7pm, answering emails at midnight. You are who we build for. So this one is for you.

Six habits for healthier hours at the desk

  • Set up your screen properly. Top of the screen at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away. On a laptop all day? A stand and a separate keyboard make a real difference.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. Your eyes will thank you by the afternoon.
  • Move every hour or two. Stand up, stretch, walk to get water. Regular short breaks beat one long break at lunch.
  • Light and water. Work near natural light where you can, and keep a glass of water on the desk. Tiredness is often just thirst.
  • Protect your focus. Batch your emails and notifications. Two hours of deep work does more than a day of being interrupted.
  • Keep a minimal setup. Keep around you only what you need. Work in physical clutter and it soon becomes mental clutter. Keep your desk simple, clean and minimal, and save your brain for the work ahead.
Month-end should be a routine, not an all-nighter.

Good systems are a wellbeing decision too

A lot of desk stress is not about posture. It is about systems that make you do the same work twice: copying figures between spreadsheets, chasing approvals by email, reconciling the bank by hand at 9pm.

When we implement technologies like Odoo and AI, the goal is not only a faster close or a cleaner report. It is you and your team going home on time. Automating the repetitive work gives you back your evenings, and your energy for the work that actually needs you.

Look after the person behind your screen. Everything else in the business runs on you.
